Panel Door
An option to a door that has boards fixed onto the frame as described in the previous page, would be the Panel Door.  Similar to the framed, ledged, braced and battened door, the Panel Door is also made-up of a timber frame. The framing for a single panel door comprises of two stiles (vertical members), a top and bottom rail (horizontal members), all of which are of the same thickness, and of course a single panel which fits into grooves on the inside edge of the stiles and rails.  Paneled doors can consists of one to six wood panels; but this may be exceeded.
All the joints for the framing are mortice and tenon or doweled.  A two paneled door framing has an additional horizontal member or middle rail which divides the area up, into two. It follows that each additional panel requires additional (grooved) horizontal members.  In addition to this, the vertical member called 'muntin', which divide the area further is added.
A paneled door is strong and secure as the panels are locked in place when the framing is brought together during manufacture. In addition to this, different types of panels can be used from plywood to solid timber of various designs and thickness.
Where glass panels are used, the inner edges of the frame members are rebated rather than grooved, so that the panel can be added after the door has been fitted. The glass panel would be held in place by the use of planted moldings or beading.
